Vietnam to host world chess championship qualifiers

Vietnam is set to host the 2007 World Chess Championship qualifiers (zone 3.3) on southern Phu Quoc Island from January 10-19, hoping to sweep all three spots in the finals.
Over a hundred masters from 15 countries and territories in zone 3.3 will compete for three spots – two for men’s and one women’s – to advance to the World Chess Championship 2007 to be held in Mexico in September.

Vietnam will send ten national players – six men and four women – to partake the qualifiers in hopes of winning all three places to finals.
They include Dao Thien Hai, Nguyen Anh Dung, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Le Quang Liem, Duong The Anh, Tran Thanh Tu, Le Kieu Thien Kim, Nguyen Thi Thanh An, Hoang Bao Tram, and Le Thi Ha.
Fifteen national chess federations classified in zone 3.3 by FIDE are Brunei, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
At the Southeast Asian Games in 2005 held in the Philippines, Vietnam dominated after gaining an absolute victory in all eight chess events.
