Niềm vui nhân đôi, khi biết tin đội sẽ là đơn vị duy nhất đại diện Việt Nam dự thi vòng chung kết ACM/ICPC toàn cầu tại Nga vào cuối tháng 6-2013.

Dù cuộc thi Lập trình sinh viên quốc tế ACM/ICPC vòng loại châu Á, tại điểm thi Hà Nội, đã kết thúc hơn một tháng nay nhưng dư âm vẫn còn "nóng hôi hổi" với Đội tuyển CTU.Optimists (gồm các thành viên: Lâm Phan Việt, sinh viên ngành Máy tính và Truyền thông K35; Lương Văn Đô, sinh viên ngành Khoa học máy tính K36; Trần Thanh Tú, sinh viên ngành Kỹ thuật phần mềm K34 và Thạc sĩ Nguyễn Cao Hồng Ngọc, Huấn luyện viên của đội). Đội trưởng Lâm Phan Việt xúc động nói: "Hôm xướng danh đội của chúng tôi đoạt giải Nhất vòng loại khu vực châu Á tại điểm thi Hà Nội, cả đội vui mừng đến nổi không nói nên lời…".

ACM/ICPC điểm thi Hà Nội năm nay tuân thủ tiêu chuẩn của cuộc thi ACM/ICPC quốc tế. Các thí sinh phải giải toán trên máy tính bằng tiếng Anh. Mỗi đội được phát 1 đề thi có 8-10 bài, cùng làm việc trên 1 PC trong 5 giờ. Các bài thi phải sử dụng ngôn ngữ lập trình C/C++, Java. Kết quả được chấm hoàn toàn tự động bằng công cụ chấm thi và công bố tại khu vực thi. Cuộc thi đòi hỏi thí sinh phải có khả năng lập trình, tư duy thuật toán rất tốt. Điều quan trọng, các thành viên trong đội phải thật "ăn ý". Đô kể: "Trong 4 giờ thi đầu, cả đội chỉ giải được 2/10 bài thi. Đội xếp đồng hạng 17, đứng thứ tự 25. Lúc ấy, chúng tôi rất lo lắng, bởi chỉ còn 1 giờ thi nữa và đội giỏi nhất hiện đã giải được 4 bài. Chúng tôi tự nhủ phải cố gắng. Khi đó, máy chấm thi báo kết quả đáp án bài giải thứ 3 của đội đúng. Cả đội lấy lại tinh thần, chúng tôi chia nhau mỗi người một việc, cố gắng sửa và cải tiến các bài đang làm dang dở. Rồi máy báo kết quả đúng 4 bài. Bài thứ 5, chúng tôi hoàn thành khi chỉ còn khoảng 20 phút cuối". Tú tiếp lời: "Giải được bài cuối cùng là nhờ vào kinh nghiệm của Việt. Chính kinh nghiệm và sự quyết đoán của bạn đã giúp đội toàn thắng trong cuộc thi". Thạc sĩ Nguyễn Cao Hồng Ngọc phấn khởi nói: "Ngồi ngoài phòng thi, tôi rất sốt ruột. Sau 4 giờ thi đầu, lúc bảng điểm đóng băng (không còn cập nhật kết quả để giữ bí mật), đội chỉ giải được 2 bài, chưa đúng với thực lực của đội. Đến khi đội ra ngoài phòng thi, nhìn Việt đưa bàn tay 5 ngón (ngụ ý làm được 5 bài tập), chúng tôi chỉ biết ôm nhau khóc vì quá vui mừng!".

Krasenkow wins the XLII Rilton Cup with 7.5/9

The Polish GM won the first four games of Sweden's biggest international chess tournament, then drew three games, then won the last two, the final one with the black pieces. That gave Michal Krasenkow sole first place, with Aleksandr Shimanov and Erwin l'Ami half a point behind. The Rilton Cup is Sweden's biggest and most famous international chess tournament. It was originally initiated by a donation from a doctor, Tore Rilton, and since 1985 the tournament is financially secure. A special challenge prize, donated by SEB Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken, is the Rilton-medal in genuine gold. The tournament has over the years been very helpful for talented Swedish juniors. This year the Rilton tournament is part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the 1912 Stockholm Summer Olympics. Every Rilton participant will receive a copy of the medal that the Olympic medal winners received in 1912.
The 42nd Rilton Cup (XLII according to our calculations is Latin for 42) is being held as a a nine-round FIDE Swiss from December 27, 2012 to January 5, 2013, at the Clarion Hotel Stockholm, Ringvägen 98, Stockholm. The event was open for players with a FIDE or national rating of at least 2200, with exemptions granted to players who applied before November 15th, and priority given to juniors. Time controls were 40 moves in 90 minutes, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with an increment of 30 seconds per move from move one. Prizes ranged from 20,000 SEK for first to 3,000 SEK for tenth (one SEK is 12 Euro cents, or 15 US cents). There were also prizes of 1,000-3,000 SEK for the different rating groups.

Gawain Jones wins 88th Hastings Masters

After eight round three players were tied for first. In round nine English GM Gawain Jones, by pure dint of determination, ground out an endgame win against his main rival Daniel Alsina Leal, and then drew his final game to take sole victory with 7.5/10 points and a 2678 performance. Behind him eight players with half a point less.

The 88th Hastings Masters took place from December 28, 2012 to January 6th, 2013. The participants of the Masters Tournament included 13 grandmasters and players from 22 countries, as far afield as New Zealand and Indonesia, Iceland and the USA. Local and regional players were also well represented. This Congress provided an entertaining feast of chess, but in addition Hastings also provides a wide variety of galleries, museums and quirky shops to interest non-chess playing accompanying family or friends. The Chess Congress is sponsored by Hastings Borough Council.

Top seed Gawain Jones (above) finished the tournament in first place with 7.5/10 points and a 2678 performance. After eight rounds he was in the joint lead with Sarunas Sulskis, Rui Gao and Daniel Alsina Leal, each with 6.0/8. In the ninth round Jones faced Alsina Leal and ground him down in the endgame (see Karsten Müller's analysis below), while Sulskis and Gao drew their games. With 7.0/9 in the sole lead Gawain clinched sole victory in Hastings with a final round 17-move draw. Behind him eight players with half a point less.

Chess Festival in Basel – Grachev wins on tiebreak

The Basel Chess Festival took place from January 1st to 5th as a seven-round Swiss tournament, with top seeds Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Boris Grachev, Edouard Romain and a host of strong GMs in a field totalling 89 players (197 in all groups).

Four players tied for first in the main group, with 5.5/7 points, with Boris Grachev (above) winning on tiebreak points. The Russian GM won his first four games and was then able to take tournament victory with draws in the last three. Top seed Maxime Vachier-Lagrave conceded too many draws and landed on place five with 5.0/7 points.

Wijk aan Zee 2013: Tata Steel Chess Super-GM lineup

This event, which has been played in the wind-swept Dutch sea resort since 1938 and was formerly known as the Corus Chess Tournament, is now named after the Indian steel company that bought Corus. The GM Group A features the world's number 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 players and is a Category 20 tournament. The first round is on January 12. Pre-tournament information with history and statistics.

Information and schedule

This event starts with an opening ceremony on Friday January 11th. The first round is played on Saturday 12th, the last on Sunday, January 27th, 2013. The venue is as usual the De Moriaan Center in Wijk aan Zee. The tournament has taken place since 1938 and was known as the Corus Chess Tournament. The Indian company Tata Steel bought Corus (for US $7.6 billion) in 2006 and the chess event was renamed accordingly.
Wijk aan Zee (pronounced vyke ahn zeh – to rhyme with "like on say") is a small wind-swept town on the coast of the North Sea in the municipality of Beverwijk in the province of North Holland of the Netherlands.

The Tata Steel Chess Tournament has three main GM groups, which play round robin tournaments (each competitor plays in turn against every other in the same group). All three groups have 14 players each and start on January 12th. All rounds begin at 13.30 hours (you can check your local time here), except for the last round on January 27th, which begins at 12.00 hours. There are rest days: on January 16th, 21st, and 24th.
